Today I had a chance to meet a revered acharya from the madhva sect.
During a discussion, he mentioned the importance of medu vada preparation during functions. It should be prepared only during shraaddha and not during any happy functions.
It is said that brahmins also used to eat deer meat in previous yugas, but only during shraaddha (death ceremony). In kali yuga, however, they are forbidden to eat meat since their capacity to eat and withstand its effects (resulting in diversion from the path of gnaana) would have significantly dimished. An alternative - medhu vada (uddin vada in kannada) is hence being used these days.
It was an interesting topic. Hence thought I should share.
